Cold weather memories

So today it's a bit nippy outside at a mere 6 degrees celcius.  HA HA HA!  Nippy for the wimpy southern Ontarians.  Nippy for me doesn't start till minus forty with windchill.  I am a northern girl after all.

I remember a night going back a few Christmases when Scott, Craig, Me, Karen and Barb went on a little 1am exploration.  Scott had told us about a portion of an old train tressle that existed on the waterfront that you couldn't see from the road because it was inside a lumber yard.  So we decided to go and check it out one VERY cold December night at 1am.  Actually I think that is one of the coldest nights I've ever been outside.  It was -40 outside and the windchill was horrendous.

The whole lot of us dressed up in our old snowsuits complete with snowpants and sorels.  Heck I think we even wore mitts and hats which we don't always do.  I took my camera which at the time was a Canon Rebel XS (this was before digital became mainstream so it was Film people!)  I knew it was too cold for the camera so I put the strap around my neck and zipped my jacket over it.

So we drove down to the harbour in my little Mazda 323. This area is sort of an industrial area and not much goes on there during the day, never mind at night.  So I parked the car on the side of the road a bit up from where we were actually going.  Really, we shouldn't have been doing this because it was private property and there were no trespassing signs EVERYWHERE.  Since it was a wood mill the place runs 24 hours so we carefully snuck into the huge lumberyard running between the piles of logs and boards.

Finally we saw what Scott had been telling us about. It looked creepy actually in the dark.  Beside it in the water was a tugboat littered with Christmas lights.  This is the point where I pulled my camera out in order to take a picture of the tressle and the tugboat.  It was pretty dark so in order to get the effect I wanted I had to drag the shutter. Needless to say because of the cold I couldn't hold the camera steady so the image came out blurry.  Unfortunately it was the only shot I got because at that point the cold had killed the batteries in my camera and we had only been out there for 5 minutes!

Karen, Barb and I actually stayed huddled among the piles of logs and boards and Scott and Craig ventured further to get a closer look at the tressle.  I think there may have been one flashlight left because the cold had killed all batteries.  It seemed like ages before they came back and I think despite our warm clothing we were VERY ready to go back to the car.  Let's just say our nose hairs had frozen quite some time ago and none of us could feel our extremities anymore.

It was a fun albeit brief adventure.  In reality it was actually tamer than some of the things we used to do when we were younger.

Yesterday I found this great resort outside of town where you can rent cabins for a week or week-end.  The cabins have a full kitchen and a jacuzzi tub and a hot tub and sauna.  I think it would be a great thing to do one week-end with the gang in the off-season.  Any place with a hot tub wins my vote. The only downside is that the hot tub is inside the cabin instead of outside.  It's much more fun when it's outside so you can watch your hair freeze under the stars.
